Interior and exterior emulsions are formulated for very different jobs. Using interior paint outdoors is a common, costly mistake — it won't survive sun and rain. Here's how they differ and how to choose.
The key differences
| Factor | Interior emulsion | Exterior emulsion |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Washability, smooth finish | Weather, UV and fungal resistance |
| Durability | Indoor wear | Years of sun and monsoon |
| Finish options | Matt to soft sheen | Matt to high-durability sheen |
Reading the range
Paint ranges are usually tiered — economy, premium and luxury. Higher tiers buy better coverage, washability, longer life and richer finish. The Birla Opus Prime range, for example, runs from economy interior (I30) to premium washable interior (I50), and economy to luxury exterior (E30 / E50 / E70).
Don't skip primer
A substrate-specific primer seals the surface, improves adhesion and makes the topcoat last longer and cover better. On new plaster, allow proper curing before painting.
