Both PPC and OPC are widely used in Indian construction, and both make strong concrete. The difference is in what's blended into the cement — and that changes durability, workability and how the cement behaves over time.
What's the difference?
OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) is pure Portland clinker plus gypsum. PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement) replaces part of the clinker with a pozzolanic material such as fly ash, which reacts over time to make the concrete denser and more durable.
| Factor | OPC | PPC |
|---|---|---|
| Early strength | Faster | Slower early, strong long-term |
| Long-term durability | Good | Better — denser, less permeable |
| Heat of hydration | Higher | Lower (good for mass concrete) |
| Workability | Good | Better, smoother for plaster |
| Resistance to chemicals/sulphates | Standard | Higher |
| Best for | Fast-track, high-grade structural | General RCC, plastering, masonry, marine |
When to choose PPC
- General residential and commercial construction
- Plastering, brickwork and masonry — smoother finish
- Structures exposed to moisture, sulphates or coastal air
- Mass concrete where lower heat reduces cracking
When to choose OPC
- High-grade concrete (M-30 and above)
- Pre-cast and pre-stressed elements
- Fast-track work needing early strength
- Where the structural designer specifies it
