Vitrified and large-format tiles have low water absorption, so the old cement-sand bed often fails to bond properly with them — leading to hollow tiles and de-bonding. Modern thin-bed tile adhesives solve this and have largely replaced cement-sand for quality tiling.
Adhesive vs cement-sand
| Factor | Tile adhesive | Cement-sand |
|---|---|---|
| Bond strength | High, engineered | Weak with vitrified tiles |
| Bed thickness | Thin (3–5 mm) | Thick (12–20 mm) |
| Wastage & weight | Low | High |
| Large/vitrified tiles | Recommended | Prone to hollowness |
| Speed | Faster, cleaner | Slower |
Choosing the right adhesive type
- Type 1 (C1) — standard ceramic tiles on internal walls and floors
- Type 2 (C2) — vitrified and large tiles, higher bond
- PU (e.g. PU2K) — flexible, for areas with movement or vibration
- Epoxy (2K/3K) — chemical and water resistance for industrial, wet and heavy-duty areas
